The Totally Awesome Waves Off Kanagawa
(Kanagawa kara no subarashī nami, 神奈川からの素晴らしい波)
Everyone should instantly recognize the famed Japanese
print, “The Great Wave off Kanagawa” (c. 1829 – 1833) – the most recognized Japanese
print in the world, from Hokusai’s series “Thirty-six Views of Mt. Fuji.” What
you may not know is that after completing that exhaustive series of works, yet
still wanting to create art but at the same time generally fed-up with Mt.
Fuji, Hokusai “recycled” the work, encompassing it in a new, more contemporary
series titled, “Too Many Views of
Mt. Fuji” (Fujisan no keshiki ga amarini mo, 富士山の景色があまりにも).
