Things grow more and more difficult for Japan's middle- and lower classes, hard-working people who didn't have a lot and now have even less. Even the poverty spirts, Bin, Bo, and Gami, are unhappy.

SHOWA CAT IS VERY UNHAPPY
Our friend SHOWA CAT is very, very unhappy with the headlines in today's news - very unhappy"! The headlines in Japan read: "Reactor restarts to be pushed in reversal of past government's pledge."
The Cabinet of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Friday officially abandoned the zero-nuclear goal of the previous administration by adopting a new basic energy policy that pledges to push for restarting the reactors idled in the wake of the 2011 Fukushima meltdowns.
The new Basic Energy Plan, revised about every three years, is a clear departure from the zero-nuclear policy set by the Democratic Party of Japan-led government, which pledged to abolish all nuclear power plants by the 2030s.
The new plan, which sets policies for the next 20 years, described nuclear power as one of the key “base-load electricity sources,” a term the government uses to describe types that can stably generate power at a low cost 24 hours a day.
The government will “promote reactivation of nuclear reactors” if they clear the new safety tests laid out by the Nuclear Regulation Authority, the 78-page policy paper states. Those tests are based on standards established by the NRA after the Fukushima meltdowns.
One might think, in view of Fukushima, that such matters of this gravity should be left to a public referendum - at least Showa Cat thinks so - I tend to agree.

THE THREE POVERTY SPIRITS: BIN, BO & GAMI
(From March, 10, 2014)
APRIL 1 IS CREEPING UP ON US but there’s still time to pre-order your official Japanese poverty spirit, Binbogami. And like the man says, if you call right away, you will get not one, not two, but three fully qualified, cute, furry Japanese poverty spirits ~ Bin, Bo, and of course, little Gami. Imagine the fun you’ll have. Tired of trying to keep up with your neighbors? Here’s your chance to do them one better! What could be better than three poverty spirits. So call now. Why, they’ll even bring their own possessions with them in an official “homeless sack,” including some old fish bones, a bag of dried bonito flakes, and some rocks and weeds for stone soup! Call early! Call often! Call now!

ABENOMICS AND BINGOGAMI
Binbogami is the Japanese poverty kami or spirit. On March 9, as a sizeable increase in the consumption tax beginning on April 1 faced the Japanese people, we decided to make our own little comment about Abenomics. "Pre-order yours now! Avoid the rush! We have ours!

NHK GOVERNORS BACK ABE AGENDA- NO SURPRISE THERE!
From the Japan Times:
Minutes of a recent NHK board of governors meeting seem to back up suspicions that Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, despite his denials, is trying to use Japan’s news giant to promote his nationalist agenda.
The minutes, posted on NHK’s website, show conservatives appointed to the board by Abe voicing their opinion on coverage at the Jan. 14 meeting.
One of the four new members favored by Abe proposed that NHK should do more to educate the public about Japan’s territorial claims on islands at the center of a dispute with China, its wartime history, as well as the problems with the post-World War II U.S.-led Allied tribunal that prosecuted Japanese war criminals.
“I think there should be room for programs that provide the most basic knowledge about history and the challenges Japan is faced with,” said one governor, Naoki Hyakuta, author of a bestselling book on a wartime suicide fighter pilot.
Another governor, Abe confidante Michiko Hasegawa, stressedthe need to promote “correct education” for the public.
It’s unclear whether their statements are affecting coverage, and NHK denied any political influence over its editorial decisions. The board members’ comments reflected their personal views, NHK said in a statement, responding to inquiries by AP.

Is there a relationship between Abe's lack of decisive action on Fukushima Daiichi and TEPCO? One wonders.
