UNCLE HAYATO'S ART CORNER (Sort of...)

UNCLE HAYATO'S ART CORNER (Sort of...)

Today we present "Flying Batsand the Full Moon by Ohara Kosnn, dated c. 1930 depicting four bats flying on a full moon night. The old name of the bat was "henfuku", which containted the word, "fuku" (happiness). Therefore, a bat was considered as a lucky symbol in Japan.

Two of the bats in this scene appear to be a bit more batty than the others but they are definitely "fuku"...

UNCLE HAYATO'S ART CORNER (Sort of) WITH SOME HELP FROM THE CATKIDS

UNCLE HAYATO'S ART CORNER (with a little help from Mr. Nekojin who is still in "Basho-mode" and his catkids). Humor goes a long way in making a work of art, as demonstrated by Zeshin Shibata's rendering of a singing frog, who strums an instrument as his froggie friends sing along. From an album titled Bokurin Hikka, this is a fine example of the unusual urushi-e technique of painting with lacquer, which Zeshin (1807-91) invented.
